Sharee Barnes

Phenomenal Woman First Responder

Sharee Barnes is a retired Lieutenant from The Markham Fire Department. She retired January 31st 2020 after 26 years of service in Markham. Sharee was raised and lived in Markham for over 22 years. She began her career with the City of Markham Fire Department in 1993 when she became the first black female firefighter in the city. During her tenure, Sharee earned certifications in Hazardous Materials Operations, Fire Apparatus Engineer, Emergency Medical Technician, Fire Officer II, and earned an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from Colombia Southern University.

Sharee worked her way from firefighter to Fire Apparatus Engineer, and then was promoted to Lieutenant in 2017. As Lieutenant, she was responsible for Incident Command, Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Service, Company Fire Inspections and Company Officer. She says that she feels both honored and proud to have served in the city that she grew up in.

Sharee is married to Kenny Barnes who is her husband of 28 years and has three daughters and three grandchildren. Since retiring she enjoys traveling and spending quality time with her family.
